Personal “Social Web”
  1. Do you think of the term “Social Network” as applying to your RL life and your RL, physical friends? Or mostly to Online & Mobile tools that connect you to people in cyberspace?

Social Network is most commonly used when referring to ones social media platforms although i believe that the name along with the methods of interaction should be applied in “Real Life”. In social media when interested in getting to know a person with out hesitation one will follow the other and the amount of self introduction is significantly higher in social media as opposed to real life and this is why i say that many of the same things should be applied our friends are a literal connections to the rest of the world and if you follow the paths that they can potentially lead to everyone around you and even beyond that. Just because we can not click on the “following” tab on your friends physical social network does not mean that you should treat it any diffrent because the connections you make in “real life” are far superior to those in  cyberspace.

2.Does Dunbar’s Number make sense to you? That we can only have around 150 truly meaningful relationships, and any others we know will be in more fragmentary ways?

I do not stand in a position to where i can speak about this from experience however i can say i highly doubt that this is the case. Keeping track and being engaged in 150 separate lives is not only time consuming but extremely exhausting. My definition of a “meaningful relationship” is one where you are active in that persons life and have a good understanding of who that complicated individual is. I just do not see how anyone can have the capability of maintaining 150 relationships of this magnitude.

3.What does it mean to have 1,000 or 2,000 or 5,000 Facebook “friends”? Who are these people? What sorts of relationships do you have to them?

Having a large following on social media does not necessarily mean that you are more social nor does it mean that you have more friends, it simply means that you spend more time managing your account, advertising your existence on the platform, browsing and following people in other accounts, and appearing in multiple accounts. The way to visualize this is that just because a product such as car or watch is highly advertised and popular does not mean it is the best on the market. Just because you have many social media” friends” does not mean that they are (if any) true friends.

4. When we visualized our Art110 Social Network, or when you visualized your personal Social Network, did anything surprise you? Did you find any connections or relationships that you hadn’t thought about or realized any different connections?

I have always been fascinated with human interaction and connection the way that potentially lead you to the entire world and how much it overlaps reminding us of how small the world can become but at the same time how much you don’t know about the people around you. Everyone in the class was connected with at least one other person and that person is connected to more and it goes on therefore the amount of interactions you can have as a result of knowing even just one person is virtually limitless.

5. What’s your Personal Number? How many people would you like to have close relationships with in your life? 1? 10? 100? 1,000?

I would like to have no more than 50 personal connections, although the number may be large i would like to be capable to have a close relationship with important people in my life. Having a goal of being a businessman it is essential to have close connections with people with important roles such as financial advisors, mentors and employees. Along with keeping healthy relationships with family, freinds and my significant other.

6. Do you have more “friends” on Facebook or some other platform than are truly your “friends”? What is your relationship to those “extra friends”? Have these weak ties ever brought you new resources like a job opening, someone to date, a cool event, info for something you were working on, etc?

I have less friends on Snapchat but more friends on Instagram. I have found that Instagram has provided me with many opportunities most having to do with social events or creating new friends, however i have found it to be unnecessary and truly a waste of my time as i could be doing something much more productive. I have deleted it off my phone to reduce the amount of distractions. I plan to start a business with the main form of advertisement on Instagram and social media then i will strive to gain the biggest following i can and utilize the features to push my business and treat them as friends to establish a loyal customer base and give my company the feel i would like and to treat each customer the way that they deserve.
